You have a dilemma! It might be related to your career, your work or to life in general.
So you do the logical thing, you explain your dilemma and ask for advice.
You might ask a friend, a work colleague or a family member.
However, unless they have your best interests at heart they won't give you objective advice - they'll give you their opinion.
Remember that anyone who starts to give you advice with the phrase, "If I were you …", is not going to give you the best advice unless they are a coach, a mentor or a professional in the field of your dilemma.
What they are really saying is, "If I had your problem, this is what I'd do..."
But they are not you: different values, personality, drivers, ethics.
They are really looking at your problem through their own personality spectacles.
Unless the person recognises this and acts accordingly with high emotional intelligence, you won't be getting 'best advice' you'll just be getting another 'opinion'.
It's time to consult your coach, your mentor or your mastermind group - and if you haven't got any of these, perhaps it's time you did!
