The Oxford English Dictionary gives us the following definitions. Career > NOUN. An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress. Job > NOUN. A paid position of regular employment.
Are you in a job or a career? Note the subtle difference between the two - it’s that little phrase, “with opportunities for progress!”
Have you made much progress lately? If not then part of the reason could be, as Benjamin Disraeli’s famous quote implies, that you don’t have the most appropriate information about how to manage your career.
It’s a bit like knowing how to bring up a child, how to manage your finances, how to develop a relationship. We’re not taught the “how to” bits at school or college, we just have to pick them up as we go along!
