Louise came to us recently thinking she was totally incompetent and that she’d never find a new job. “184 applications, 6 interviews and no offers,” was the way she put it.
She was obviously very persistent but clearly something wasn't working. We analysed what she had written about herself, how she answered a few typical interview questions and what was going on mentally. Three challenges were revealed.
1. Her CV only mentioned responsibilities: what she had done.
2. Her answers to interview questions did not illustrate her attitudes, her values, her transferable skills nor her achievements.
3. She had not forged any mental links between her achievements and the transferable skills that made these achievements possible.
In short she was totally underselling herself because, in her words, “I don’t like boasting.”
Yes persistence is vitally important but it needs to be supported by the right tools and attitudes applied in the right manner. As one of my mentors says, "If you want to change some things in your life, you have to change some things in your life."
We worked with her to "change some things" and I'm happy to report that her persistence finally paid off.
