If you don’t control your career, someone else will and it’ll usually be your boss, your line manager or your employer.
If you let this happen as a matter of course then your career will take over every aspect of your life, it will dominate every waking moment and it will take all the pleasure out of your leisure time, social interactions and family relationships, not to mention your ‘me’ time.
Your career is not supposed to control you - you are supposed to control it. But to do that you have to manage it proactively. The starting point is to define what you want and then to work on making the dream a reality.
