Too many of us focus on obstacles, the things that get in the way. To counter this we need to decide what we want out of our careers and what we want out of our lives.
We need to understand how to integrate these career and life objectives, to recognise any incompatibilities between them and to reconcile the differences with an appropriate compromise.
If we do this we finish up with a set of written career and life objectives. It then becomes so much easier to achieve: our focus on the objectives helps us keep the obstacles in perspective: it stops us from creating mountains out of molehills!
The closest most of us ever get to this is to spend six months planning a fortnight's holiday, but we don't even spend a fortnight planning what we intend to do with the rest of our lives.
Consequently we just drift through life and it is no surprise that most of us finish up in the 91% of the working population who hate Monday mornings. Sad but true!
