Andy was in his pushchair and didn't feel like talking. His Mum made excuses for him when she met friends saying, "Take no notice of Andy - he's a bit shy!"
Andy grows up hearing this phrase constantly and eventually starts making excuses not to engage with others because, as he says, "I'm shy."
So Andy grows up thinking he's no good at developing and maintaining relationships with others - not because he isn't, but simply because he thinks he isn't and he tells himself he isn't.
We tend to become what we think we are; we think we are what we are told we are; much of what we are told we are, we tell ourselves. Accordingly, be very careful what you say when you talk to yourself!
