We've all heard the expression, "It's not what you say or write, it's how you put it across that counts."
Another version about interviews says, "Your message is only 10% what you say and 30% how you say it, with the remaining 60% coming from your energy, enthusiasm and body language."
No matter how often we hear this message, as my wife says, "For most people it just goes in one ear and out both!"
It's fine if you are an experienced raconteur, a stand-up comedian, an actor, a well practised orator or an after-dinner speaker.
However, for most job seekers, 'knowing how to put it across' is not among their top transferable skills - it takes practice.
If you are working with a mentor, they'll say from their own experience, "I think you should express it like this, ...."
If you are working with a coach, they'll help you develop by asking, "How do you think you should express it?"
Either way, what they will do is to help you project the right attitude and after all, that's what counts in a job interview.
